SPRING Sessions • Scout Studios
From Brooklyn, New York, to Sydney’s Inner West
If you’ve been around the Pilates industry long enough, you’ll know it’s surprisingly small. That’s one of the reasons we love it. Teachers cross paths in one city, years go by, and somehow those same relationships resurface somewhere completely different.
SPRING Sessions is all about celebrating stories like these. The ones that begin in one studio and, years later, show up again in a completely different city.
In today’s SPRING Session, we sat down with our Sydney partner studio, Scout Studios’ Founder Lucy Beaumont, and SPRING’s Co-Founder Kimmy Kellum to talk about how their partnership came to be and where they’re headed next on their Pilates teacher training journey.
Let’s start at the very beginning…
Well before Scout became SPRING’s official Sydney partner, Lucy followed her dream, packed her bags, and moved to New York City back in 2016. Somewhere between soaking up Brooklyn’s creative energy, culturally rich landscape, and figuring out the subway, she began teaching at East River Pilates (ERP), the studio founded by Kimmy, and where they consequently met.
ERP was still in its early days then, and the space lived in a tiny basement at the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge. It was cozy, a little gritty, and full of personality. The kind of place where you walked down the stairs and found yourself in a room full of creatives, freelancers, and dreamers.
Lucy felt at home straight away and ended up teaching at ERP for several years, part of a community that celebrated diversity, inclusivity, and seriously good Pilates. The classes were strong but welcoming, high-level without the ego. When she later returned to Sydney and founded Scout Studios in Sydney’s Inner West, she brought that exact same vibe with her.
The Inner West has its own version of that energy. Creative, independent, full of people building things, whether that’s a business, a brand, a practice, or an idea they’ve been sitting on for years. Scout quickly became known for contemporary movement, inclusivity, and high standards without intimidation. The kind of place where you get a seriously good workout and somehow end up staying to chat. Just like East River Pilates, Scout is approachable, warm, and, above all, fun. So when the idea of teacher training entered the conversation, the goal was never just to add another offering. It was to do it properly, with depth and integrity.
SPRING Movement, founded by Kimmy Kellum and Aussie physiotherapist Talia Williams, felt like a natural continuation of that story. In 2025, SPRING and Scout connected to form a new partnership, making Scout the exclusive Sydney host studio for SPRING’s Mat and Reformer Teacher Training programs. Together, they are focused on nurturing the next generation of Pilates teachers in Sydney and supporting people as they transition into the careers they’ve been dreaming about.
To talk about how it all came full circle, we sat down with Lucy, Kimmy, and the SPRING team.
Lucy and Kimmy
Lucy, you first met Kimmy working at East River Pilates. What did that environment teach you about teaching and about studios?
My teaching experience at ERP and the studio culture as a whole was very different from places I’d worked before. What stood out straight away was the emphasis on teaching everyday people really well. Classes were dynamic and expertly led, but always grounded in accessibility and genuine care.
“ERP showed me that inclusivity and high standards don’t have to be at odds. Great teaching isn’t about exclusivity or performance. It’s about meeting people where they are and helping them feel successful in their bodies.”
It was also one of the first studios where I saw a community built intentionally, not as a happy accident. Mentorship, trust, and respect between teachers, and between teachers and clients, were clearly prioritised. That experience really highlighted how much studio culture matters, and how powerful it can be when leadership invests in their teaching team just as much as technique to give clients the best possible experience.
Kimmy, what stood out to you about Lucy as an instructor during her time at ERP?
When I met Lucy, she immediately stood out. She had a way of waking people up in their bodies and in their minds. You knew you were about to work hard, and you wanted to! Clients came to her for a burn, and whether they liked it or not, they’d be sore for days…guaranteed. Lucy’s classes were challenging in the best way. You were guaranteed to leave feeling stronger than when you walked in.
What made her teaching so special was how intelligently it was crafted. Simple sequences, but incredibly effective. Nothing wasted, nothing random. I still remember some of her classic glute sequences on both the mat and the Reformer, and I still teach them to students all these years later whenever I have the chance. They land every single time.
Lucy also has a fun piece of ERP history tied to her. She taught the very first Reformer class at our S 1st Street flagship studio. I was teaching in the mat studio that day, and one of the students in Lucy’s reformer class was Claire Toone, who is now the founder and owner of Noosa Flow in Queensland, Australia. She went on to open Noosa Flow not long after that class.
“It’s a small world, and moments like that remind you how interconnected this community really is.”
Lucy built a real following because people trusted her. They knew she would push them, support them, and respect their bodies all at once. That kind of trust isn’t something you can manufacture. She cares deeply about the work, about her clients, and about being part of something bigger than just her own classes.
Lucy, how did your experience at ERP shape the way you later built Scout Studios in Sydney?
My time at ERP deeply influenced the standards and values I carried forward when building Scout. It showed me what’s possible when care, consistency, and integrity are truly prioritised, and I wanted those principles to sit at the heart of everything we did. ERP also reinforced the importance of building community with intention.
“Rather than leaning into the mass-media version of Pilates, I was drawn to creating a space that offered accessible movement to absolutely anyone who was interested, meeting people wherever they were on their movement journey.”
That approach naturally created a diverse, welcoming community, and it also made sense from a business perspective. Offering Scout to the broadest possible audience felt both sustainable and meaningful. Just as importantly, ERP shaped how I support instructors as skilled professionals who deserve respect, development, and genuine support, because strong, caring teachers are the foundation of any strong studio.
Lucy, when Scout began exploring teacher training, why did SPRING feel like the right education partner?
When we started exploring teacher training at Scout, SPRING felt like a natural extension of what we already believed in. There was a deep trust in Kimmy and the philosophy behind SPRING, the way education is delivered with both professionalism and heart. While we were aware of many other training providers, we consistently heard from instructors where those programs fell short, particularly when it came to support beyond the curriculum itself. There seemed to be a real gap between learning the material and feeling confident applying it as an instructor.
We wanted to partner with a program that was internationally recognised, had a strong track record, and genuinely invested in developing teachers for the long term.
“SPRING stood out for producing instructors who are not only technically strong, but also curious, compassionate, and committed to ongoing learning, qualities that align so closely with the values Scout was built on.”
Today, SPRING is a global teacher training program, and Scout is its exclusive NSW host studio. How do those roles support one another in practice?
Together, our teams and communities at SPRING and Scout create something special, each bringing something essential to the student experience.
SPRING offers the education framework, curriculum, and ongoing mentorship, providing structure and depth throughout the training journey. Curiosity is woven in from the very beginning and fostered along the way, inviting students into a lifelong relationship with learning.
Scout provides the environment where that learning truly comes to life. Light-filled, airy, thoughtfully designed studios that feel both calming and energizing. An engaged, inclusive community. A pace and presence that invites teachers to settle in, stay curious, and fully absorb the work within the cultural rhythm of Sydney and across NSW.
“Together, we help students move from training into a teaching career they have been dreaming of. The experience feels expansive yet grounded, globally connected while remaining unmistakably local.”
There is shared care for quality and integrity, so teachers feel supported not only during their training, but as they step forward into their teaching lives.
Talia, Lucy, and Kimmy
What makes this partnership meaningful is that it’s grounded in real, long-standing relationships. The Sydney community will recognise the familiar faces of the Scout instructor team, now stepping into SPRING educator roles. There’s something truly special about learning from the teachers you already trust.
At its core, this partnership is built on shared experience, shared standards, and a genuine respect for the craft of teaching. And yes, to put it simply, our Sydney community will be learning from some of the best in the industry.
What started with one instructor teaching in a slightly gritty New York basement has grown into a global education partnership landing in Sydney’s Inner West. Different cities. Same commitment to quality, inclusion, and community.
And if this industry has taught us anything, it is that the relationships you build early on have a way of circling back in the best possible way.
This one just happened to cross an ocean.
