From Brooklyn to Brisbane

Make Your Move: In Conversation with Power Moves, SPRING’s Partner Studio

Hi to our growing SPRING community, and welcome to the second edition of SPRING Sessions!

Kimmy here. This is the space where I sit down with studio owners, educators, students, and industry professionals to really get to know the people behind the movement. It is a spotlight on our community and definitely my monthly highlight. There is something truly so special about watching new faces join this journey and seeing how quickly it starts to feel connected.

Today’s feature feels like a big one. From Brooklyn to Brisbane, my home for over fifteen years…For those of you who’ve never visited, Brisvegas is where it’s at!

As SPRING continues to grow, what we are realizing very quickly is that you can cross oceans and still find the same passion, the same commitment to delivering incredible Pilates, and the same care for building strong and connected communities.

What I love most about witnessing this evolution is that while so many of us share the same pulse for Pilates, we are all expressing it differently. Different cities, different energy, different studio cultures. Somehow, we all have the same heartbeat.

SPRING’s teacher training is designed to make sense inside each local community. It is not about producing cookie cutter instructors. It is about nurturing the next generation of Pilates teachers so they can grow into their own voice, their own leadership style, and their own communities. We are here to celebrate individuality and build confidence without losing personality. So here’s to doing Pilates our way. Here’s to backing ourselves. And here’s to Brisbane.

Ok, it’s time. Let’s meet the Power Moves power couple, Mike and Morgan, and dive into their journey.

“Move with purpose.” That’s the standard at Power Moves.

With two expansive, warehouse-style boutique studios in the heart of Brisbane, West End and Newstead, Power Moves blends industrial scale with elevated detail. They have built a progressive, functional movement experience. The kind that blends traditional Pilates foundations with dynamic, athletic programming and absolutely no hiding in the springs.

Strong bodies. Strong minds. No shortcuts.

But here’s how this one actually began. What started as a voice note in the Power Moves DMs quickly turned into a spontaneous trip to Brisbane and one of the hardest Reformer classes I have ever taken. I wish I were exaggerating.

From the first few minutes, I knew this wasn’t choreography layered on for effect. It was intelligent. Purposeful. Progressive. The kind of programming that makes you reassess your confidence halfway through and then immediately want to book back in. By minute twelve I was humbled. By minute twenty I was bargaining internally. To be fair, I was about six months postpartum with my third baby when I decided this was a great idea. The layering was smart. The progressions made sense. The burn was very real. At one point I remember thinking, respectfully, this is not a playground. But that’s the thing. It was hard in the right way. Not chaotic. Not flashy. Every sequence built with intention. Athletic, and grounded in real Pilates.

After class, humbled and very sweaty, we grabbed coffee across the street.

What was meant to be a quick thirty minute meet and greet turned into well over an hour. We talked about everything. The evolution of Pilates in Australia. The responsibility of studio owners. Entrepreneurship. Teacher training. Mentorship. Burnout. Standards. Sustainability. What teacher training should look like. What it absolutely should not look like. And the responsibility of shaping instructors, not just selling certifications.

“And Brisbane? It is buzzing and bustling to say the least. There is real momentum here. New studios opening. Big energy. Committed clients. Instructors craving more depth, more structure, more long term pathways.”

Sitting there, coffee in hand, it was so obvious. Morgan and Mike care deeply about how this industry grows. Not just that it grows.

As Power Moves becomes SPRING’s Brisbane home for Pilates teacher training, we sat down properly to talk about building empowered instructors. Not just strong clients. Not just a great workout. But sustainable careers.

Because giving people a good workout is easy. Making people feel sore the next day is easy.

Building teachers who truly understand what they are doing? Building teachers who can sustain it?

That is something else entirely.

Power Moves’ Co-Founders: Mike and Morgan

Morgan and Mike, when you first opened Power Moves, what was your vision?

From day one, we wanted to create a space that felt elevated but accessible. Luxe but not intimidating. Results driven but grounded in purpose.

“We saw a gap in the Brisbane market for something progressive. A place where traditional Pilates technique met modern athletic movement. Not driven by trends or choreography, but focused on functional movement, layered progressions, and clear intention.”

Power Moves was built to challenge people in the best way possible. Every class is programmed with purpose. Every session is designed to build strength, coordination, stability, and mental resilience. We did not want people leaving just sweaty. We wanted them leaving stronger, physically and mentally.

You describe Power Moves as a progressive, functional movement experience. What does that actually mean in practice?

For us, it means respecting traditional Pilates while evolving it.

Our classes draw from traditional Mat and Reformer Pilates, but the way we program them is more progressive — movements are layered, resistance is challenged, and there is always a clear pathway for progression.

On the Reformer, classes like Fundamentals focus on building alignment, strength and control, while more advanced formats such as Evolve introduce greater complexity and load. Our Hot Mat classes bring a more athletic dimension through conditioning, weights and higher-intensity work.

Across all formats, the focus remains the same: functional movement that builds strength, coordination and resilience beyond the studio.

Brisbane’s Pilates space is growing quickly. What do you believe the industry needs more of?

“It’s exciting to see how quickly the Pilates industry is growing in Brisbane. As more studios and instructors enter the space, maintaining depth in education becomes increasingly important.”

The industry benefits from instructors who have a strong understanding of movement mechanics and the ability to adapt their teaching to different bodies. Pilates works best when it’s taught with intention and awareness, rather than simply delivered as a sequence of exercises.

Strong foundations in both training and teaching ultimately create better outcomes for clients and more sustainable careers for instructors.

Power Moves has built a loyal community across both studios. How do you maintain culture as you expand?

Culture is something you have to be deliberate about as a studio grows. We place a lot of emphasis on who we bring into the team, and we run our own teacher training and ongoing mentoring to maintain a high standard of teaching across the studios.

Clients are trusting us with their bodies, which is something we take very seriously. That sense of responsibility influences everything from the way classes are programmed to the energy in the room.

We also create opportunities for the community to connect beyond the class itself through events and gatherings across the year.

“Ultimately, we want members to walk into the studio and feel supported, challenged and confident in the work they’re doing.”

When you decided to introduce Pilates instructor training into Power Moves, what felt essential?

“When we decided to introduce teacher training at Power Moves, it was important that the course  reflected the same standards we hold across the studios. We weren’t interested in offering something surface level.”

Education plays a significant role in shaping the future of the industry, so we wanted a program that prioritised:

  • Technical precision

  • A strong understanding of functional movement

  • Mentorship throughout the process

  • Long-term development as a teacher

“The goal isn’t simply certification, but helping instructors leave the program feeling confident and prepared to teach well.”

What made SPRING feel aligned with Power Moves?

SPRING felt like a natural fit for Power Moves because their approach to education is thoughtful, structured and well established.

The Mat and Reformer training pathways allow instructors to build their knowledge progressively, with a strong emphasis on mentorship and real teaching experience. It’s designed to support instructors well beyond the initial certification.

Bringing that model to Brisbane aligned closely with how we approach movement, teaching and long-term development at Power Moves.

What does hosting SPRING’s Pilates teacher training in Brisbane mean for your community?

For our community, it creates a meaningful opportunity. Aspiring instructors in Brisbane can complete a high-level Pilates certification within a working studio environment.

“Rather than learning in isolation, they’re surrounded by real classes, real clients and experienced instructors. They also have the chance to learn from educators they already know and trust — many of whom have shaped their own movement journey.”

It helps bridge the gap between study and teaching, and prepares instructors for the realities of the studio floor.

What kind of instructor do you hope graduates from Power Moves?

We would love to see instructors graduating who:

  • Move with purpose

  • Teach with clarity

  • Understand progression

  • Lead with confidence

  • Care about longevity for themselves and their clients

“The industry does not just need more instructors. It needs better ones and if they carry those values into their teaching, we’ll be very proud to have played a small part in their journey.”

Make Your Move

Power Moves is now SPRING’s Brisbane home for teacher training and we couldn’t be more excited to see the familiar faces of the Power Moves instructor team stepping into SPRING educator roles.
